Where you can and can't take ballot selfies
As many of us head to the polls to vote in this year's presidential election, you may be tempted to take a photo of your ballot and share it online. Before you do, taking selfies or photos of your ballot may be illegal where you live.
According to Lawyers for Good Government, many of these laws are decades old and are designed to prevent voter fraud, coercion, and bribery and protect ballot secrecy. Ballot selfies are legal in 24 and illegal in 13. The other states are unclear or only allow selfies with absentee ballots.
The following table shows which states allow or prohibit taking selfies or photos of your ballot. It is important regardless of whether or not you are permitted to take photos of your ballot to check local election laws. The information provided below is not legal advice and you should follow all state, local, and federal laws.
