Operable WCAG 2.4.1

Skip Link

A mechanism to bypass repeated navigation and jump to main content. Typically the first focusable element on the page. Only ~13% of homepages have one.

In plain terms

A 'skip to main content' link so keyboard and screen-reader users don't have to tab through the whole menu on every page.

Why this matters

Without a skip link, keyboard and screen-reader users must tab past the entire menu — sometimes 30+ links — on every page before reaching the content. Only about one site in seven provides one.

How to detect

Quick check

Load the page and press Tab once. Does a 'Skip to main content' link appear, and does activating it move focus to the main content? It can stay visually hidden until focused.
